Artifacts

Artifacts were sorted into two groups, diagnostic (ceramics, glass, bone, pipe bowls, etc.) and non-diagnostic (wood, lead slag, charcoal, ballast). Diagnostic artifacts were photographed with scales then typologically, technologically, and functionally analyzed. They were conserved in-house or reburied, depending on each object’s specific needs. Non-diagnostic artifacts were categorized, photographed with a scale bar, and placed in bags filled with salt water for later reburial.

The French team surfaced a section of wood from the shipwreck to sample its age, species, and construction origins.
