Fortifications

Britain operated two main Caribbean bases in the 18th and 19th centuries: Port Royal, Jamaica, and English Harbor, Antigua. Other depots in the Bahamas, Barbados, and St. Lucia developed over time, but Antigua continued to serve British naval interests during this period. As dockyard amenities grew in size and permanence throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, so did the need for defensive fortifications at English Harbor. The fortifications are well known and many of the structures continue to function as popular tourism sites in Antigua. Part of this research program is to continue documentation of the ruins to assist in on-going site monitoring and risk assessment.
