L’Herminie was a French Frigate that was launched in 1824. It was three masted and carried 60 cannons. In 1837, L’Herminie was sent to the Mexico to help enforce French claims in Mexico. But after a brief stay in Cuba, over a quarter of his crew fell ill with yellow fever. Due to the lack of sailors and existing problems with the ship, it was recalled back to France. In 1838, while caught in heavy seas, L’Herminie ran in to a reef off of Chubs head. Fortunately, British sailors were able to rescue all 495 crew members.
The wreck itself was discovered in the 1950’s and expeditions have been set out by several organizations including the Smithsonian and East Carolina University.
