COUNCIL FOR EDUCATOR PREPARATION

Minutes for January 8, 2018

Speight 203 at 3:15 p.m.

The fifth meeting of the Council for Educator Preparation for the 2017-2018 academic year was held Monday, January 8, 2018 at 3:15 p.m. in Speight 203. Members present:  Jennifer Adams, Barbara Brehm, Charity Cayton, Vivian Covington (Chair), Bernice Dodor, Johna Faulconer, Nanyoung Kim, Laura King, Laura Levi-Altstaedter, Marissa Nesbit, Dan Novey, Jeff Pizzutilla, Caitlin Ryan, Nicole Smith, Lora Lee Smith-Canter, Christina Tschida, Cynthia Wagoner, Jamie Williams, and Elaine Yontz.  Visitors in attendance were Laura Bilbro-Berry, Crystal Jones, and Shari Steadman.  Absent were Ellen Dobson, LCSN-PCS Representative, Rhea Miles, Christy Walcott, Ivan Wallace, Kevin White and Undergraduate Student Representative.

Approval of Minutes December 11, 2017 Meeting

The minutes were approved with two minor grammatical changes and the spelling of Jane Manner’s name.

Standing Update from the Office of Assessment, Accreditation and Digital Learning

Due to the absence of Ellen Dobson, there was no report.

Standing Update from Office of Clinical Experiences & Alternative Licensure

Members were reminded of upcoming dates reported at the last meeting. The Inclement Weather Policy is in the Apple Book.  If a school is open for teachers, interns should report, but use judgment regarding travel conditions.  Make-up time can be made in 30 minute increments.  The OCE website has a downloadable spreadsheet for interns to track their make-up time.

Old Business

Handouts were distributed regarding the new ruling on licensure/testing for spring 2018 completers forward with emphasize placed on the exception for hiring in spring 2018 and summer 2018.

All candidates completing an undergraduate level educator prep program in the spring of 2018 and forward will be required to complete the appropriate licensure exams, PRAXIS II and/or Pearson tests, before ECU makes a licensure recommendation. Graduation can occur without passing test scores.

There will be a one-time exception for spring 2018 and summer 2018 candidates.

  • Upon documentation of employment, licensure recommendations will be made even if tests have not been taken or passed.
  • Candidates employed under this exception must meet the employment standard for required tests, which is to:
    • Take the required test(s) at least once during the first year of employment and pass the required test(s) before the end of the second year of employment.

New Business

None

Charity Cayton asked if interns can proctor exams. It was noted that they can, but cannot be alone in the classroom.  They can be trained and assist in proctoring.

Curriculum Committee –No report. Meeting dates will be announced later.

Evaluation & Planning Committee – No Report

Admissions & Retention – No report

Policy – No report

Progress Reports Revision Task Force meeting dates will be forthcoming form Ellen Dobson.

There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 3:30 p.m. The next meeting will be February 12, 2018 in Speight 203 at 3:15 p.m.
