Welcome and Introductions

Vivian Covington, Chair, called the meeting to order. There was a quorum with 15 of 23 eligible voting members present. In addition, three present members brought the vote of members of their departments who could not attend, and two additional members shared their vote via email to Covington given they had previous commitments. This brought the total votes possible to 20 of 23 voting members.

Business

Vote on the proposed change to the Educator Preparation Program Professional Core course requirements to assist program areas with the UNC–System Office regulation mandating reduction of undergraduate degree programs to no more than 120 credit hours. UNC Policy Manual 4001.5[R]

Covington restated the proposal on the table and reviewed the handout (see attached) of the current core and the proposed changes. Program areas, not individual students within a program area, have the option of choosing either EDUC 4400 or EDUC 3200. In addition, programs may keep both courses if they so desire. The vote is to allow the option. Program areas are reminded that they will have to red line the course their program area will not be taking and leave the course the students will be taking. Programs will need for their catalog copy to show only the required course, not the choice. For example, Program area XXXX chooses to keep EDUC 4400 and drop EDUC 3200, and change the number of professional core course credits to match, red line out current and add in new in blue. Their catalogue copy would look similar to this:

Professional studies – 30 27s.h.

  • EDUC 3002 – Introduction to Diversity or
  • PSYC 2777 – Ethnocultural Psychology or

Motion and Vote

Motion was made by Elaine Yontz and second given by Ivan Wallace. Motion was to allow a choice between the two currently required professional courses, EDUC 4400 and EDUC 3200, with program areas, not individual students deciding which course to keep and which to remove. The motion carried by a vote of 19 to 0, with no abstentions.

Adjournment

The meeting adjourned on the motion by Walcott and second by Brehm. The motion carried and the meeting dismissed at 3:30 pm.

Respectfully submitted,
Vivian Martin Covington, Chair
