Minutes for February 12, 2012

The sixth meeting of the Council for Teacher Education for the 2011-2012 academic year was held Monday, February 13, 2012 at 3:15 p.m. in Speight 312. Members present: Vivian Covington (Chair), Michael Bossé, Michael Brown, John Carlson, Mike Dawson, Kylie Dotson-Blake, Bethann Fine, Bill Grobe, Laura King, LCSN- PCS representative Lionel Kato, Mark Malley, Susan Morgan, Graduate Student Rep-Jennifer Nester, Lisa Rogerson, Marcela Ruiz-Funes, Shari Steadman, Jane Teleki, Ivan Wallace, Jamie Williams, and Sarah Williams. Absent were Lena Carawan, Johna Faulconer, Cheryl Johnson, Jami Jones, Diana Lys, Sharon Schleigh, and Undergraduate Student Rep.

Chair Vivian Covington welcomed everyone.

Agenda I – Approval of Minutes

The minutes from the January 9, 2012 meeting were accepted as written.

Agenda II – Announcements

The Spring 2012 Career Fair for education majors (current and alumni) will be held February 21, 2012 at the Greenville Convention Center from 9-12:00 p.m. This fair is required for Senior II students except those in the virtual programs. ECU OneCards and business dress are required for admittance. Over 160 employers and 58 school systems will be recruiting at the fair. This is an increase from last year. School systems have requested breakout rooms for interviewing; therefore, students should bring their resumes.

Some IHE faculty members have requested access to the documents, resources, and training modules that DPI developed for next year’s implementation of the Common Core and Essential Standards. These are the tools that the LEA teams are using and were provided earlier to those IHE faculty that participated in last fall’s October IHE training. All IHEs have access to all of the Phase I Educational modules housed at NC Education at this link https://center.ncsu.edu/nc/login/index.php. When creating an account, please use your university email to help in tracking university representation. The site includes a help desk number and email.

Agenda III – Assessment Update & Accreditation

Diana Lys was unable to attend the meeting today to report on SACS, NCATE or DPI.

Agenda IV – Standing Update from Office of Clinical Experiences

Susan Morgan, Lead Coordinator OCE/AL reported that Wendy Buck Petteway, a new coordinator, has joined the Office of Clinical Experiences. Please stop by Speight 104 and welcome her. The OCE office is in the midst of practicum placements. If you have students in a placement assigned by your program area, please send a list of the students with Banner IDs, the name of the school and clinical teacher.

Ms. Morgan and Dr. Covington will be meeting with Bill Frazier and Cheryl Olmstead to discuss practicum placements and the contact person to assist with this; either principals, assistant principals, or department chairs in the high schools. They would like to discuss what is the university minimum requirements and the schools maximum requirements. They want students to get the experience needed to move successfully through the teaching experience.

Student dress is important in practicums, as well as in the internship.

Senior I application rounds begin soon. The first due date is April 2; the second is May 11, and July 2 is the third and final date to submit applications for Fall 2012/Spring 2013. Ms. Morgan and Lisa Rogerson are meeting with prospective COE Senior I students this Friday. Policy and Procedure Forms should be signed by the student and returned with the internship application.

NC Teach, a condensed licensure route for lateral entry teachers, will begin again this summer. Twenty-three students have applied. If you have changes in courses required for licensure, please notify the Office of Alternative Licensure so that templates can be properly updated. Websites have the disclaimer, “subject to change”; however, they are also updated.

Agenda V – Old Business

Grades of “C” or better in teacher education professional core courses, as well as the 24 hours in program areas designated for the blueprint are required for licensure. The following statement is in the undergraduate catalog under the College of Education, Requirements for Students Preparing to Teach. A minimum grade of C in the teacher education professional core courses and internship and a minimum 2.5 GPA are required for licensure. This pertains to all teacher education program areas.

If a student took PSYC 3206 prior to being admitted to Upper Division Fall 2010, the course will count. We will work with transfer students with this course who are second semester juniors or forward.

Agenda VI – New Business

2010-2011 licensure completer data for teacher education students in undergraduate degrees, licensure only programs, lateral entry, and MAT graduates will be sent shortly. The same information at the graduate level will be available also. When received, please share with your dean/director.

Agenda VII – Standing Committees

Curriculum, Mike Brown, chair – Reported that the committee met and approved the following.

  1. Recommend approval of BITE 4250, 4600, 6250, and 6600. These were 5000 level courses split at the undergraduate and graduate level.
  2. Recommend approval of course revision for EDTC 4001 to include pre-requisites taken prior to Upper Division and updated course information. Revisions correlate with national and state standards.
  3. Recommend approval of course revision for EDTC 6992.
  4. Recommend program changes for Counselor Education program:
    1. Program length change from 48 to 60 semester hours to meet the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs standard.
    2. Course revisions for COAD 5370, 6409, 6411, 6415, 6482, 6991, and 6992.

The report was accepted.

The next meetings of the CTE Curriculum Committee are March 12 and April 2, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. The room will be determined.

Evaluation & Planning, Diana Lys – No report

Admission & Retention, Sharon Schleigh – No report.

Policy, Johna Faulconer – No report Vivian Covington asked the members of the Admission & Retention Committee to remain and meet concerning a recent issue. There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 3:55 p.m. The next meeting will be March 12, 2012 in Room 312.
