Guidelines for the HBR/HA summary/critique blog

  • Start browsing the sites for an article you want to blog about as early as possible

The links are : https://hbr.org/topic/healthcare and  https://www.healthaffairs.org/topics

  • Harvard Business Review (HBR) contains pieces written by experts from the world of business and Health Affairs by writers well-grounded in health policy and research.  Both periodicals provide strategies or options for improving/ reforming health care delivery. For example, some authors might suggest ways for reducing the costs of care delivery, others on how to improve quality through innovation, and still others on how understanding the social determinants of health as well as the use of information technology can help fuel a public health revolution that can improve overall population health.
  • You can gain free access to the articles on the journal’s site but may be limited in how many times you can login to the site and access it. Therefore, I strongly suggest looking up the title on either the Joyner or Laupus library web sites (input title on the “one search” menu bar on library home page) Once you connect  save the url or pdf file so you will continue to have access to it as you read it and work on your blog.
  • A review usually includes a summary of the key concepts and points made as well as a critique of both content and delivery of the message. This includes evaluating what the authors have to say as well as how they say it. For example, are their positions realistic or are there weaknesses with their theses that you can point out to the reader?  After reading your assigned article  you will then write a 650 – 1000 word blog that :
  1. summarizes key concepts from the article as well as….
  2. offers a critique of the writers’ position.
  • Title your blog piece “title of your HBR article_yourfirstinitiallastname”. For example, if I plan to write a blog on an article about why innovation in health care is so hard then my blog title is Why innovation in health care is so hard_SHarris.
  • Your blog entry for this assignment is due by 6 AM Sept 26. Reply/commentary blogs are due by 6 AM Sept 30. I look forward to reading your thoughts and opinions on these articles.
