Field Practicum Virtual Options

Hi Students,

As a reminder, the Applied Field Practicum (PUBH 8684) is a 5-credit hour course that takes place in a public health agency or organizational setting. Identifying an appropriate field setting is the responsibility of the student and must be approved by the program before registering for the course.

As part of these requirements, students must also identify a preceptor (mentor) along with completing 400 contact hours of work to produce a “meaningful” public health deliverable.

If you meet the prerequisite course requirements, have met with your advisor and are considering taking PUBH 8684 in the summer/fall, please contact me no later by April 30th so that we can complete the necessary paperwork and get you registered.

For students that may be encountering challenges (e.g., COVID-19, travel distance), finding qualified public health organizations for their field practicums, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health, Occupational and Environmental Health Branch (https://epi.dph.ncdhhs.gov/oee/) may have virtual opportunities available. Topic areas includes environmental justice, preparedness, occupational and environmental epidemiology and other..,

If you meet the requirements and are interested in considering this option, please contact me and submit the following.

  1. Cover letter; express area of interest/topic
  2. Current resume

Once I have received and reviewed, I will forward to Ms. Clay, MPH at NC DHHS. Again, this opportunity is an option for those that are unable to find field locations.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you and have a good week!

– Dr. K.
