Physical activity = any bodily movement that results in energy expenditure (i.e., burning of calories) (Caspersen et al., 1985)
Exercise = a specific type of physical activity that is planned, repetitive, and done for a specific purpose (Caspersen et al., 1985)

2.Types of exercise (anaerobic vs. aerobic). Both anaerobic exercise are associated with health benefits.
Aerobic exercise = activities in which a person maintains an elevated heart rate for an extended period of time. Aerobic activities can be light, moderate, or vigorous intensity depending how much heart rate increases. Examples include walking, running, and swimming.
Anaerobic exercise = activities in which a person elevates his/her heart rate for a short duration, and then rests before increasing heart rate again. Anaerobic exercise includes activities like weight lifting, and plyometrics. Unlike aerobic exercise, anaerobic exercise cannot be performed for long periods of time without rest.
3. Benefits of physical activity
Improved sleep
Decreased stress
Improved self-esteem
Improved mood
Improved cognitive function (i.e., study smarter, not harder)
Reduced risk for depression/anxiety
Reduced risk for heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes
4.Where can students/employees go on campus to be active?
On our campus at East Carolina University, we have the Campus Recreation and Wellness (CRW) facilities available to students, faculty, and staff. These facilities include a 10,000 sq. ft. weight and fitness area, indoor and outdoor pools, 5 racquetball courts, an indoor running track, and a 27 ft. climbing wall. Students and CRW members also have access to the North Recreational Complex (NRC), and multiple walking/running routes on and off campus. The NRC includes 8 multipurpose activity fields, an Odyssey High Challenge Course, and multiple walking/jogging trails.
