Korean Culture – Sport

  1. In Korea, we have three kinds of most famous sports are baseball, basketball and soccer. When Baseball and Basketball pro- league season open, many fans are going to stadium for cheering their team. In soccer case, not too much fans than baseball and basketball. But we loves soccer. That’s why we opened Korea-Japan World cup in 2002. Many people became a football enthusiast through the 2002 Korea-Japan world cup. And we can see that many students likes to play soccer in school. I hope that many fans would like to see soccer match again soon like in 2002 Korea-Japan world cup.

  2. This is so neat. Our country also participates in those three sports. Soccer is not as common in the professional aspect in america. However I have a few questions.

    1. Other than the major sports what kind of out door sports do you guys participate in ? (cycling, hiking, fishing, hunting, etc.)

    2. Being that this college is based out of Seoul, how has the Olympics impacted the community?

    3. Does Korea participate in American Football (not soccer)?

    4. What are some famous professional teams in Korea for each sport?

    5. Do athletes compete in college or do they go straight to the professional leagues?

  3. In Korea, we have less chance to access not popular sports. In particular, soccer and basketball are the most easily accessible sports for students. All schools possess nets for soccer and basketball.
Besides the major sports, I guess it is difficult to start out door sports such as fishing, hunting, and cycling because we need expensive equipment to start those kinds of sports.

  4. That is interesting, I love to do outdoor education with my kids because I love the outdoors.

  5. Hi Barrett 🙂
I live my reply from what I know.

    1. I think the sports we play is really up to people’s interest but other than major sports such as soccer, baseball and basketball, there are not many club teams in university. We normally have soccer, baseball and basketball club teams in each department and major in university. To give you some examples about sports we have in university other than this three are boat race, yacht, ice-hockey, rugby, bowling, billiards, lacrosse and so on. In short, we play many other outdoor sports too if we are interested and have chance to do it.

    2.

    3. No. We don’t play American football.

    4.

    5. I think this is case by case. I heard that in soccer and baseball, if they play well enough, they go straight to professinal leagues but basketball players mostly have to go through the college league. Also, universities have entrance process to select athlethe student who have experience as a elite player or current players.

  6. Taekwondo is the sport that represents Korea. Taekwondo is similar to Karate from Japan. But each has its own unique skills and history.

  7. Are their club teams at the collegiate level for Taekwondo? And are do college offer scholarships for this sport?
