On August 25, 2013 in Sunday’s Daily Reflector newspaper, two of our MATE graduates have been honored. The first, Ms. Lynnly Martin, an ECU MAED & ECU MATE instructor, is to be congratulated for being a Pitt County School Teacher of Year finalist! Lynnly teaches mathematics at Hope Middle School. Also, congratulations to Ms. Anita Koen, an ECU MATE Clinical Teacher, for being another Pitt County School Teacher of Year finalist! Anita teaches mathematics at South Central High School.
Dr. Abbie Brown Makes the Top 20 Education Professor’s List
North Carolina Online lists Dr. Abbie Brown in their list of Top 20 Education Professors in North Carolina. Dr. Brown was selected for his recent achievements, winning both the Presidential Service Award from the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) and an Excellence in Distance Learning Teaching award from the North Carolina Distance Learning Association. North Carolina Online sought to find educators who have been influential in their field and who have made a positive difference in the lives of their students.
Dr. Brown’s students agree with their choice. At the 2013 graduation ceremonies several of Dr. Brown’s students met him in person for the first time. Their excitement was palpable. “Dr. Brown is the best,” gushes LaKesha Williams. “I feel like I know him! He always answered by questions right away on email or we did Skype when I really needed help.” North Carolina Online knew what they were doing when they picked Dr. Abbie Brown for their list of Top 20 Education Professors in North Carolina.
Teachers Attend AP Summer Institute
From June 24 to June 27 the Center for STEM Education at East Carolina University hosted an AP (Advanced Placement) Institute endorsed by the College Board. More than 50 teachers from North Carolina, Florida, South Carolina and Virginia participated in sessions in high school biology, calculus, chemistry or statistics. Taught by experienced teachers trained and endorsed to teach AP, the participating teachers learned new STEM content and engaging teaching methods, practiced new lab skills and exchanged tips for helping their students excel on AP exams. Many teachers believe that the ideas made while attending an AP Institute will help keep them motivated and excited for the next year. Not only was the Institute great for teacher learning, but it is also a great way to network, including a pizza supper held one evening at the Center.

You may see a lot of children in the classrooms around the Flanagan Building this summer. This is the location for the ECU Summer Science Camp. This camp is open to students in elementary and middle school. During the students’ time at this week-long day camp, they learn how fun science really is! ECU’s dedicated students and staff organize activities each day that engage and inspire a spirit of continual learning. From discovering how to build a rocket ship out of straws and paper to learning the anatomy of animals, students explore the many facets of science and its impact on their everyday lives.

MSITE is starting Launch into Mathematics Teaching
Calling all first year elementary teachers!
With grant support from the Z Smith Reynolds Foundation, MSITE is starting Launch into Mathematics Teaching. LAUNCH is a two-year program for first year elementary teachers focused on teaching mathematics. The program includes professional development and ongoing mentoring. We will work with participants to:
- Dig into the Common Core State Standards for the grade level they are teaching
- Become familiar with texts, pacing guides, and assessments used by their district
- Learn strategies for fostering student reasoning and problem-solving
- Develop an organizational system to keep track of student formative assessment data and use it for instruction
- Collect grade level specific activities, ideas for daily mathematics routines, and beginning-of-the-year activities to build a community of mathematics learners
- Create and organize classroom materials
