Thank you for your interest in participating in the Audio and Tech Equity Research Study! This research will collect speech recordings of Black and white children between the ages of 3.5 and 5.0 years old and a primary female caregiver. The audio recordings will be used to develop a database (corpora) of recordings and transcripts of the recordings. This information will be used to test and improve existing Natural Language Processing algorithms that are used in automatic speech recognition (ASR) programs. The data will also be analyzed for similarity and difference in the children’s speech (comparing boys to girls and Black children to white children) and between the children and the parents. This information will help us understand the following. 1) differences in the children’s speech that confuse the ASR 2) general differences in the speech of children by sex and race 3) differences in the speech produced by children and their caregivers.
Dr. Holt’s lab is located in the CSDI Research Lab Suite. The room number is 2310L. The research lab suite is on the second floor by the bathrooms where allied health and nursing connect. The entrance door is right outside of the stairwell to the left (or if coming from the allied health and nursing coupling walkway, right). It is directly above the clinic and directly under our department suite. If this location is still unfamiliar to you after my direction, please do not hesitate to ask me for clarification!
We greatly appreciate your interest and we are looking forward to meeting you in the lab!
