ASHA 2023-Igniting Innovation

About

The purpose of this study was to explore the use of African American English (AAE) and the impact it has in the classroom and on the academic performance of African American children. A literature review of research on the relationship between standardized test forms and AAE use was conducted. Next, informal interviews were conducted with African American (AA) and non-African American (NAA) ECU students to evaluate their perspectives on AAE use. Results indicated that although most respondents, both AA and NAA, use AAE language forms, sometimes they do not see the language form as appropriate for use in the educational setting. These responses suggest AAE use continues to be viewed negatively, even by people who use the forms.

Learning Outcomes

  • Discover the impact AAE usage has on African American students in an academic setting.
  • Discuss the opinions and experiences of AAE rom the perspective of African Americans and non-African Americans.
  • Identify next steps to strengthen inclusivity, knowledge, and representation in the academic setting for African American students who use AAE.
