Featured BSEH Alumnus: Dean Ricken

Dean Ricken graduated from our BS Environmental Health program in May 2016.  He moved to New York City where he began his consulting work as an Industrial Hygienist for TRC Companies, Inc.  In addition to working for TRC, Dean is pursuing a Master of Science (MS) degree in Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences at the City University of New York (CUNY) School of Public Health (SPH). Dean plans to take the CIH examination after his graduation from the CUNY SPH.

The following are photos showing some of Dean’s notable work experiences:

Confidential Client – Air and wipe sampling for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) as part of an exposure evaluation at one of the nation’s largest passenger railroad stations
National September 11 Memorial & Museum – Involvement in the sampling of World Trade Center artifacts for the memorial and museum for lead, man-made vitreous fibers (MMVF) and bulk asbestos
Consolidated Edison Company of New York – A wide range of industrial hygiene consulting and testing services, including personal and area monitoring for employee exposures to noise, asbestos, silica, lead, welding fumes and hexavalent chromium

Here are some words from Dean for our EH students:

“The value of field experience cannot be overstated. I am approaching the one year mark since my graduation from ECU and have been able to apply many of the principles outlined in our Environmental Health classes to the real world. Every interaction with EH&S professionals early on will be pivotal to your progress in this field. I encourage all environmental health students to surround yourself with these individuals, seek opportunities of interest, and ask questions. Understand that the learning does not stop after graduation. Develop a pursuit for knowledge and keep moving forward.”
