Dr. Charles Humphrey was featured yesterday on ECU news, highlighting his 3-year, grant-funded project to improve water quality in the Lick Creek watershed near Durham, NC. The Lick Creek drains to Falls Lake, which is nutrient-sensitive body of water and recreational area that serves as a major water supply for the Raleigh area. The purpose of the project is to improve the nutrient treatment efficiency of septic systems in the area to reduce sources of nutrients to the Lick Creek and Falls Lake. The project involved the installation of a drainage way bioreactor in a small tributary of Lick Creek. ECU graduate students, Christa Sanderford (MS Environmental Health student) and Guy Iverson (Coastal Resources Management doctoral student), worked with Dr. Humphrey on this project and will continue to monitor water quality over the next several months.
A previous EH blog posted on April 2017 described this project with related photos.
