Dr. Stephanie Richards posted a Terminix blog this week on spatial repellants and their use to avoid exposure to mosquito bites. Public health officials from federal and local agencies advise the public to wear topical repellents that contain DEET or other active ingredients approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as well as long sleeves and pants to cover skin. Dr. Richards discussed about the history of repellents, the difference between topical and spatial repellents, and the mechanisms on how these repellents work. She also stated that repellants can be an important tool for the public to help protect themselves against arthropod exposure, but the public should be informed about the potential benefits and drawbacks of repellents.
