Dr. Sinan Sousan (Dept of Public Health faculty), Dr. Lok Pokhrel and Dr. Jo Anne Balanay received a funding support of $3000 through Innovation Corps@ECU (I-Corps@ECU). I-Corps@ECU is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and nurtures the formation of ideas, innovation and commercialization of inventions through proven methods of customer discovery and business model innovation. Their funded project titled “Nex-CaFi: Developing Next Generation Cartridge/Filter for Mitigating Pesticide Exposures in Farms” aims to conduct research to develop a prototype called “Nex-CaFi” (Next Generation Cartridge/Filter) for respirators. Nex-CaFi is expected to be light weight, highly efficacious against pesticides, and have long service life with service life indicator. Using activated carbon modified with nanotechnology, the team’s aim is to develop the Nex-CaFi in the next six month (12/01/18 to 05/30/19). The small budget will cover supplies and consumables needed for the project.
