The ECU Environmental Health Sciences (EHS) Program conducted today an environmental health (EH) lab tour for about 20 American Indian high school students who are rising sophomores, juniors and seniors that have an interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), as well as agriculture, veterinary, plant, food, environmental sciences, and natural resources, wildlife biology, and related fields. These students are part of the “Safeguarding our Natural and Tribal Heritage Youth Program” (SONTH), held at UNC Pembroke and sponsored by U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). The students visited the ECU Carol Belk Building and were guided by Dr. Guy Iverson to 4 of the EH laboratories. The following faculty, staff and students led the following lab demos:
- Occupational health / industrial hygiene lab – Dr. Jo Anne Balanay and Danielle Carter (DrPH student)
- Water lab – Dr. Charles Humphrey
- Vectors lab – Dr. Stephanie Richards, Avian White and Heidi Knecht (DrPH student)
- Nanotechnology lab – Avian White
The EH lab tour was coordinated by Mr. William Hill, BS Environmental Health Program Director. This event was a great opportunity for the EHS program to reach high school students as potential students in the program and be future environmental health specialists.Photos courtesy of Dr. Guy Iverson
