MS Environmental Health Student Receives DSCERC Pilot Grant Award 2023

MS Environmental Health student (MSEH), Bridget Angol, was awarded a NIOSH Pilot/ Small Project Research Training Grant of $9,999 from the Deep South Center for Occupational Health and Safety for her proposal titled, “Comparison between WBGT App Prototype and WBGT Monitor to Assess Heat Stress Risk in Groundskeeping in an Eastern North Carolina University Setting”. This funded study will be her research project for her MSEH thesis. Dr. Jo Anne Balanay serves as her faculty adviser. The study aims to assess the reliability of a wet-bulb-globe-temperature (WBGT) app prototype in providing accurate heat stress risk information for ECU groundskeepers. If found to be reliable, the app may be used by supervisors and managers responsible for the heat safety of outdoor workers to alert them in a timely manner about taking preventive measures to reduce risk of heat-related illnesses.
