Dr. Jo Anne Balanay and her summer research intern, KiHyira Jones, were featured this week in the local newspaper, Daily Reflector, about their research on heat stress. Their research aims to compare heat stress exposures of outdoor workers on pavement vs. grass surfaces. The ultimate goal of the study was to prevent outdoor workers from having heat-related illnesses.
KiHyira, from Fayetteville State University, is one of the 12 selected students who came to ECU for a summer immersion program involving minority-serving institutions across the state for mentored research projects. The immersion program is part of an ECU and Fayetteville State partnership that secured more than $1.3 million in grant funding from the North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation to address regional and public health
needs.
