Rodents as Vectors of Pathogens: Focus of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome

Dr. Richards posts a Terminix blog this week on rodents as vectors of pathogens.  The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists diseases that are directly transmitted by rodents of concern in North America, including Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, leptospirosis, lymphocytic chorio-meningitis, plague, rat bite fever, salmonellosis, and tularemia. Most pathogens are directly transmitted to humans by rodents either by rodent bite or inhalation or ingestion of infectious rodent urine and/or feces. In this blog, Dr. Richards focused her discussion on Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, how hantavirus is transmitted, and activities that increase the risk of contracting hantavirus.
