Dr. Richards posted a Terminix blog last week on the biology of bats, diseases related to bats, and how to keep bats out of buildings. Bats can possibly transmit pathogens to humans either through bite or from aerosolized droppings, and thus should be excluded from homes. Bats are associated with rabies and other diseases, such as Marburg hemorrhagic fever, Ebola hemorrhagic fever, Nipah virus encephalitis, and histoplasmosis. Homes should be inspected for possible bat entry points, and large openings should be properly sealed.
