Ask Miss Liza: Public Swimming Pools

Dear Miss Liza,

I’m so excited to be taking swimming lessons this week! The water looks so clear. It appears to be a nice pool and the people are so friendly. Are public swimming pools inspected? And… can you swim, Miss Liza?

Lauren

Ask Miss LizaDear Lauren,

Of course I can swim!! …Some call it “walk-swimming”. I walk while in the 3-feet section of the pool and move my arms on the top of the water… and… I’m swimming!!! Yes, all public swimming pools, spas, including hotels, fitness centers and apartment complex pools, hot tubs, water parks, water play areas, and interactive fountains are approved and inspected by your local environmental health specialist. They inspect the pool circulation system, decks, fences, wastewater disposal, safety equipment, water chemistry (pH and chlorine) and other areas. Environmental Health Specialists are responsible for the prevention of what we call “Recreational Water Illnesses” (RWIs). Good luck with the swimming lessons AND… don’t forget to kick your feet!!! Bye!
