Dr. Guy Iverson, ECU Environmental Health faculty, was featured in the ECU News and YouTube video this week for being part of an ECU team that successfully tested wastewater from residence halls last Spring semester to detect SARS-CoV-2 as early as possible to reduce transmission and avoid outbreaks where students live. This approach is important as part of a surveillance program for early COVID-19 case detection.
In addition to helping prevent COVID-19 clusters, the wastewater testing project also gives students like MS Environmental Health student, Melissa Nolan, a great opportunity for lab experience in preparing wastewater samples for further SARS-CoV-2 testing. The project has paused for the summer but will start again in the upcoming Fall semester.
