Dr. Jo Anne Balanay and Dr. Stephanie Richards serve as guest editors of a Special Collection titled, “Insights into Diversity in the Environmental Health Science (EHS) Workforce” of the journal “Environmental Health Insights”.
Diversity, as a currently wide-ranging societal topic, impacts the Environmental Health Science (EHS) field. Aspects related to diversity in EHS involve communities affected by environmental exposures and the EHS workforce serving these communities. Environmental exposures affect everyone’s health but may be disproportionately influenced by race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic and other factors. Diversity in the EHS workforce helps advance the field by stimulating new ideas, perspectives and approaches, and may be improved through recruitment of a diverse student body in EHS academic programs. Diversity in the EHS workforce is important to improve the health of entire communities, including those underserved and underrepresented. Public health is inevitably connected at local, state, regional, and global levels, hence it is essential to work together to advocate for healthy individuals and communities.
The aim of this Special Collection is to bring together research on disparities in communities at risk of environmental exposures (e.g., environmental justice), diversity in the EHS workforce, the need for diversity in EHS research/researchers and EHS educators/students, and other related topics.
