Dr. Guy Iverson gave a talk titled “Pork Production. Pollution? Problems? Evaluating Swine CAFO’s in Eastern NC” today during the Public Health Seminar series. In his talk, Dr. Iverson presented some preliminary results from his current research on concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) for swines. His research study evaluates nutrient concentrations in water resources that are recharged by groundwater beneath spray fields where swine wastewater is periodically land applied for soil amendment. In his presentation, Dr. Iverson discussed that preliminary findings indicate that the CAFO was a substantial nitrogen source to water resources. He also shared that this project will involve future work that will evaluate the efficiency of a denitrifying bioreactor or similar practice to attenuate elevated nitrogen concentrations from the CAFO.
