Virgins Auctioned!!!!

This week’s reading dealt with the issue of trafficking of sex slaves. One major issue brought up by the authors was the number of virgins that were kidnapped and forced into slave.  These young girls are sought after due to their virginity and its overall monetary value in sex slaves. The article I am posting deals with the auctioning off of virginity, but not sex slavery. In this post we see a young girl, 20 years of age, sell off her virginity to a bidder in Japan for the amount of $780,000. This astronomical bid shows the perceived cultural value of a women’s virginity in society. The interesting point this can be compared to is the perceived value of a man’s virginity. A young man sold his virginity for $3,000, a stark difference in comparison to the young woman. What does this further say about the perceived value of an individual’s virginity in relations to their sex?
