George R.R. Martin Defends “Game of Thrones” Sexual Violence Against Women in HBO Series

HBO’s series “Game of Thrones” is in the spotlight after many critics were not happy with the show airing a rape scene and incorporating other acts of sexual violence.   The show diverged from a book series by George Martin who did not include such assaults in the book but was added to the show by creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. However, Martin sat down with Entertainment Weekly to explain why there is violence against women on the show. Martin states, “The books reflect a patriarchal society based on the Middle Ages. The Middle Ages were not a time of sexual egalitarianism.” He also goes on to explain that there is something fundamentally dishonest not to include sexual violence in the show where there is war, cool battles, and heroes killing orcs.

With that being said, do you think this a promoting sexual violence in a positive way since it is coming from a popular TV series? Especially to vulnerable populations like teenagers and preteens?
