Algeria Passes Law Banning Domestic Violence Against Women

Algeria’s parliament passed a law in March criminalizing domestic violence against women and recognizing it as a criminal offense. The passing of this law was met with harsh criticism and concerns by conservative followers of Islam. Many made comments such as that this law was an “attack on men in general” and that “it would be easier to have a mistress than be married and run the risk of being taken to court.”

Even though this law was met with controversy, the statistics do not lie. Violence is growing against women, especially in Middle Eastern cultures. Police figures from last year show 58 percent of cases that involved violence against women were domestic incidents.
