Opposition to Local Shelter for Male Victims of Sex Trafficking

Late last week, a presentation to the community about a shelter for male victims of sex trafficking not only brought awareness to the subject, but also voices of the opposition.  The shelter is being built in Greene County, a neighbor of Pitt County.  Opponents were upset that the land was purchased under a different name, claiming that it was in an effort to keep citizens unaware of what the land was to be used for.  Proponents explained that a different name was used to keep perpetrators from finding victims who will be sheltered there.

I can’t help but wonder if the opposition to this shelter is fueled by a lack of understanding the issue and needs of the victims or by intolerance and discrimination. Certainly the founders of the shelter are trying to raise awareness and increase understanding, yet their opponents views appear unchanged.  Might there be underlying issues such as threats to masculinity at play?  The two opponents interviewed were both male. What other factors might fuel the opposition?
