Luke Heimlich, a top prospect in this year’s Major League baseball draft, has a dark past. At the age of 16, he pled guilty to molesting his 6 year old niece. Heimlich has since completed his sentence of probation and counseling, but his sealed record went public in 2017 as a result of him forgetting to register his new address after moving. As a result, the University of Oregon State faced major scrutiny for standing behind him. In fact, he was allowed to remain on campus and is leading his baseball team in another run to the College World Series. I’ve read a few articles involving Heimlich’s case, and all questions of guilt/innocence aside (he pled guilty while maintaining his innocence in order to protect his family), do you think this would have been handled differently by the University of Oregon State had he not been a star athlete? Furthermore, do you think that athletes should be allowed to be drafted to professional teams with this kind of record?
