This article talks about the astonishing levels of violence against women in Southeast Asia and young girls. The statistic that popped out to me here was that 1 in 10 girls experienced sexual violence (not from a partner) before the age of 15. And if this wasn’t enough, the same women agreed that it was acceptable to be beaten if they were unfaithful to their husbands, that rate was at 1 in 4.
My question for the class is this, what do you believe would be the best way to provoke change in such a patriarchal society such as Southeast Asia in order to make life for young girls and women safer? Along with this I wonder how you would go about making these changes.
