Gender Based Violence In Schools After Pandemic

Gender based violence has always been an issue in schools, but after the pandemic it increased tremendously, specifically for females. According to the article, A Whole School Approach to Preventing And responding to SRGBV, school related gender based violence includes “sexual, physical, psychological and economic violence occurring in and around schools as a result of gender norms and stereotypes and enforced by unequal power dynamics”. After the Covid outbreak hit and schools finally started to open up, it caused more girls to be vulnerable to abuse. In a study that occurred in March 2021, showed that there were 4959 teenage pregnancies and 1774 child marriages in countrywide. To prevent gender based violence, schools have set up a Whole School approach method that involves teachers finding the root of the problem and better manifest the classroom environment. Some of the strategies to the Whole School approach is to establishing and conducting a code of conduct, engaging parents, and improving reporting, monitoring, and accountability.

  1. Wow, that’s really sad. I am happy that schools are now more aware of it and are addressing it and trying to do something about it. Do you think that students didn’t learn the proper social etiquette due to Covid restrictions?
