The Death of Miya Marcano

Miya Marcano was a 19-year old college student who attended Valencia College. Tragically, Miya was murdered by a maintenance worker where she lived and also worked, at least police are pretty sure the culprit was Armando Caballero. Armando was a lot older than the victim. Police know now that he used a universal access key to break into her apartment and have evidence that shows his lust and somewhat of an obsession for her. The saddest part of this story is that chances for justice and closure the family of Miya could have maybe received was taken away. Armando committed suicide a few days after the time Miya was suspected to be killed. He was found before she was. Despite refusing him, telling her friends about her worries about him, his past job-history (woman complaining about how she also felt about him), criminal records, nothing was done to ensure Miya’s safety from this predator. It is sad something tragic must happen for someone else to decide that we should read/acknowledge/address red flags in this predator situations.

In a more positive light, the Marcano family is suing the apartment owners for negligence in this situation. Hopefully this tragedy can be more than just that, and instead become a lesson for us all, to do our singular yet objective part to stop violence against women in the world.

  1. This is another instance of the vulnerability of women in these private-public places. She is not safe at home due to the access of building staff. Beyond one lawsuit, how can laws change nationally so this unfettered access is not allowed?

It reminds me of the Petito situation, given that the alleged perpetrator killed himself after the incident. This also happens with frequency in domestic violence murders.
