Op-Ed on the Catholic Church

The Catholic Church is being accused of child sexual abuse by people in Ireland, the US, France, Argentina, Australia, and more. Since the 1950s, there have been sexual abuse accusations against the Catholic Church. Canada and the US brought public attention to this issue within the Catholic Church in the 1980s. The investigation conducted by “The Boston Globe” on the Catholic Church in 2002 caused the Catholic Church to receive a lot of media attention on this issue. This was a prime case in the 2000s and has recently come back as a prime case 21 years later.

The Catholic Church’s in the US moved the individuals accused of sexual assault to different locations and didn’t remove them as leaders. Most of the victims of this were mostly boys from ages 11 to 14.

The Catholic Church has since 2001 made countless apologies on this issue. Also, US dioceses paid off the victims from 2000 to 2010. Pope Francis said that he would “end all cover-ups” in February 2019. In December, if you have child pornography, commit sexual abuse, cover-up sexual abuse, or groom minors you will be in violation of the Vatican law. I feel like everyone accused of this crime should be stripped of their title and go to jail. It also makes me wonder about how the other religions handle sexual assault accusations.
