In our reading we discussed Saudi Arabia and the plight women face in its discriminatory social policies. WE also discussed King Abubullah and his promise to fight for women’s rights in his country. In some small way it looks like he is coming through with his promise, with the appointment of 30 female members to the Shura Council. The Shura Council advises the government on new laws, acting as kind parliament for the country. This is the first time in the history of the country for women to hold such a high office. But will this actually do any good for a country that is so steeped in its misogynistic culture towards women? Is this a real act towards the advancement of women, or is it just an appeasement towards much promised advancements for women’s rights?
