Angelina Jolie at the African Union Summit

This is a very short synopsis of what Angelina Jolie said as she attended the African Union Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa today. She called for an end to rape and the epidemic of violence against women worldwide.  She also called on women to be an integral part of the solution – working cooperatively with men to pass legislation and design programs which will inspire positive change for women.

We often see celebrities making public statements and taking political stands. Do you think that celebrity endorsements for change make a difference?  Do their statements actually influence world leaders or do they simply raise public awareness?  Would the public be as interested in these types of issues if it weren’t for celebrities publicizing them?
