Modeling the veil is the latest advertisement by retailer H&M to market their clothes to a wider audience. Only this time, they had Mariah Idrissi don the veil as a fashion statement and perhaps appealing to the younger generation since Idrissi herself is 23 years of age. The retailer was respectful and sensitive towards Idrissi’s style of dress, however Idrissi drew some criticism for her actions. Others feel this is a step in a direction of tolerance and hoping that in the future the hijab will become acceptable among the broader society. This may seem to be a sales pitch or a fashion statement but that’s not the way Idrissi sees it. “I would say, make sure your intentions are correct in terms of why you’re doing it. Hijab isn’t a fashion,” she says. “We can adjust it to fashion but we have to remember that the sole purpose of the hijab is to be modest.”
