Abortion Rights in Ireland

The social issue that is popular now in Ireland leading up to the 2016 elections is the debate over abortion rights. Abortion has been illegal in Ireland for 32 years and can result in an imprisonment sentence of 14 years. No legitimate reason is accepted under the law in Ireland for abortion unless the life of the mother is at risk. For that reason, many women who have abortions actually travel outside Ireland to either England or Wales to have their abortions performed. Cancelling the abortion law has been advocated by feminists, doctors, actors, and organizations like Amnesty International. Because of the culture shift of gender roles, many feel that there is a chance for repealing the law as there are multiple polls that show that citizens are open to widening the scope of the abortion law.
