This article addresses the new regulations that have taken place recently and illustrates that there is hope for significant changes to counteract campus rape culture. There have been recent changes in the federal Campus Sexual Violence Elimination (Campus SaVE) Act that officially was implemented in July 2015. This legislative is the product of years of increased attention and activism that pushes schools to confront sexual violence on and around campuses.
This legislation gets right to the point with requiring every school to promote and offer “primary prevention and awareness programs” that reduce the risk of sexual assault. This is in contrast to earlier legislation that only required schools to develop education programs. These required programs will not only help educate the public on sexual assault, the definition of consent, and how to recognize sexually abusive behaviors, but also call for minimum standards in campus judicial proceedings.
