Series of femicides cast a dark shadow over México’s ‘sunshine state’

November 25th

Over the past 2 weeks there have been 7 reported murders in Mexico’s Quintana Roo. Quintana Roo, the largest tourist attraction in Mexico, sees nearly 14 million visitors annually, accounting for close to 1/3 of all of Mexico’s tourism. Because of this, Mexico is keeping the now 18 female Mexican deaths this year. Leaders of gender violence in Quintana Roo claim that calling for justice will not lead to a decrease in tourism, however the local government disagrees.
Quintana Roo has one of the highest rates of sexual violence and human trafficking in mexico. It has a reknown history of exposing celeberties, politicians, and many tourists interests in child pornography, prostitution, and rape. Quintana Roo’s police departments have no DNA testing for crimes and the state only has one place for female refuge, both of which is a clear problem. I personally believe that even though tourism is very important to Mexico’s economy, the lives of their women should be the main priority. Plus, if it gets out to the public that these murders are happening, it may have an negative impact on their tourism.
