I was recently reading an article published in The Nation, titled Ten Things to End Rape Culture. I agreed with everything the article mentions yet I believe that it was missing what I believe is the most important factor to ending rape culture; that is a change of name.
Culture from an anthropological definition is the system of shared beliefs, values, behaviors, and artifacts that members of a society use to cope with their environment, and is transmitted from generation to generation. When we add the word culture to rape we are essentially diminishing the problem because culture is something that we all accept. The name “rape culture” is very passive aggressive, rape is an act of violence and should name as such.
Maybe with a different name, we can call attention to the issue. What do you guys think?
