Gender and Relationship Discrimination In Academic Hiring

Gender+RelationshipStatusDiscrimination

This semester I will be focusing on Gender Discrimination within Higher Education for my term paper. This particular article is on a study conducted at a large R1 University on its hiring practices for new professors. The study finds that when it comes to hiring those women who are of ample qualifications but are married are discriminated against because their husbands are seen as immovable whereas married and single men, as well as single women, are seen as easily able to to uproot their lives for new positions. This leads me to think that marital status will be important when looking at Gender discrimination within higher education and that mothers especially will be targeted.

This raises the question of whether or not institutional hiring practices need to be further monitored to prevent gender discrimination that is a direct result of relationship discrimination within the hiring process.
