Policing, Religion and Women in NYC

This article written by the New York Times details the settlement that has been reached between the city of New York and three Muslim women who had been forced to remove their hijab in front of male officers and other male inmates. If you are unaware, women who practice Islam are not supposed to take off their hijabs in the presence of men who are not of their own family. Two of the three women protested their hijab removal while in the precinct and the third was harassed by one of the officers once he was able to see her hair. Ultimately they won $60,000 a piece and caused all precincts in the city to allow those who wear religious garbs ( such as muslims, Orthodox jewish women, and Sikh men) to have their photos taken with the religious garb.
