For those of you who are familiar with the Olympic gymnasts and the scandal with Larry Nassar, who was a trainer for the team Aly Raisman was a part of-
Raisman was a victim of sexual abuse, along with her other teammates. She has since been campaigning about victim shaming and sexual abuse, her campaign is called Flip the Switch. Someone had asked her if the clothing gymnasts wear during events should be changed to prevent abuse, and her response was great. She responded by stating:
“I was recently asked if gymnasts should continue wearing leotards,” she tweeted. “Leotards [are] not the problem. The problem is the many pedophiles out there & the adults who enable them. By saying clothing is part of the issue, [you] are victim shaming/implying survivors should feel it’s their fault.” – HuffPost, 2018
I think this issue is something brought up in many abuse cases. The whole, “Well, if she didn’t dress that way” or “If she didn’t wear so much make-up” excuse. Raisman is absolutely correct, it isn’t what victims wear, nor how they act or look, it’s the society that’s shaped people to think that making up excuses like that would even be acceptable. Her campaign slogan couldn’t be more accurate.. it’s time to flip the switch.
