Overview: Gender-based violence is awful in South Africa. When it’s reported it’s very brutal and shocking, but it lacks contextual analysis. This lack of contextual analysis leads to consequences such as the normalization of gender-based violence and the descriptions are created in “popular reporting”, which doesn’t help society figure out a correct way with dealing with individuals who commit gender-based violence. Aside from these issues, there is also a lack of will to fight against crimes such as gender-based violence.

Opinion: I believe that it’s good to have brutal, shocking articles about gender-based violence to catch the audience’s attention. However, these reports on these crimes need to be better and need to include how the community can make things better. I also believe that more effort should be put into addressing gender-based violence instead of only giving it a minimal amount of attention and lastly, I also feel that despite the hard feelings these women have towards men, women and men both need to come together to put an end to gender-based violence.

Questions: What advice would you give to individuals who are working on trying to end gender-based violence in South Africa? What do you think is an appropriate punishment for individuals who commit gender-based violence? What actions can the government take to make this better?
