Fanshawe College students and faculty rally in wake of sexually violent, threatening online posts

On September 20th 2021, 70 students and faculty members gathered and took a stand against sexual and gender based violence on their campus. A couple days later thousands students at Western University walked out of class in protest of “Culture of misogyny” on campus. Fanshawe held a rally that was way smaller in London, Ontario.

The ‘Take Back Our Campus’ rally at Fanshawe college had 70 students and faculty members  join together on their Merlin field in light of “threats of sexual violence” made online last week. This event was organized in collaboration between the college, sexual violence prevention team, and Fanshawe Student Union.

Last week couple of posts were made online. These posts were sexually violent and threatening posts. These posts were on ‘Discord’ which is an online communication app where people can text, call, and make servers/groups. The college was aware of the threat of potentially tampering with student drinks at the FSU operated restaurants on campus. Fanshawe has stated the posts and the users have been deleted but the investigation on who have done this is still ongoing.

  1. I’m glad that it wasn’t only students that gathered and faculty also made their voices known. I feel like in some many situations a faculty member is less likely due to the possibility of losing their job. I hope more outcries happen and universities and apps really step up their policies and rules because it is insane how much it happens on a daily basis.

    Thank you for sharing!

  2. This is an example of how college life is not just a cocooned place away from “real life,” but it is real life. These campus activist events are important. Many faculty here at ECU would and do collaborate in events like this. Those of us who are tenured don’t have to worry about losing our jobs, and even many untenured are not afraid to do this.
