New support group for students impacted by sexual violence to meet at KU

For this blog post, I chose an article about a new support group for sexual assault survivors at the University of Kansas. I chose this article because I feel it is important for sexual assault survivors to be heard by people that have experienced the same thing as them. The article mentions a sexual assault that happened at a local fraternity in Kansas (Phi Kappa Psi) and they held a “No Means No” rally at the frat. I’ve noticed that sexual assaults have been happening more and more often at fraternities, and it saddens me to know that so many people have gone through this.

My first reaction after reading the article was disgusted by the fraternities actions, but not surprised. As of September 12, the case is under investigation. The fraternity released a statement last week stating that they became aware of the assault on the 12th of September; a day after the case happened. Having a support group is a great idea for sexual assault survivors so that they know that they aren’t alone. Most survivors don’t want to talk about their assault to other people because they might not understand, but the people in the support group will know exactly how they are feeling. A support group is good for any traumatic event.
