The UK’s New Plan to Protect Women

Violence against women is nothing new, and happens all across the globe. Sarah Everard is a young woman who lost her life due to this violence. Her murder has led to the public lack of trust in law enforcement. The government has come up with a new strategy to help protect women, but their plan isn’t what we need!

An article in The Conversation states that the new plan “continues to place the burden on women and girls to keep themselves safe, rather than addressing the causes of their lack of safety.”

Here are a list of some of the procedures and plans they have announced:

1.More funding to the “Safety of Women at Night”

2. An app to track locations where women feel unsafe

3. Appointing a “transport champion”

This isn’t the first time Women in the UK have protested government orders that a meant to protect them. There have been curfews set in place for women in efforts to keep them safe. In return women mobilized and formed the Reclaim the Night movement.

Women in the UK are fighting the same battles as the women in the US, but we have not seen those same efforts by the government to protect women. Do you think the critics of these new plans are right or wrong? Do you think women in the US would react well to a curfew? I know I wouldn’t, it shouldn’t be my responsibility to hide from predators. Not to mention attacks against women don’t just happen at night.

  1. Great Article! In my last article I covered the women’s abuse / rape that was being done in the United Kingdom. It was interesting to see how common it was there, and also how many police where sweeping the abuse under the rug/ also abussing women. You made a great point that the United Kingdom government is not making the same efforts to protect these women as our government is.
