Starting Up: Look at the cover with your child and explain that an excavator is used to dig up dirt at construction sites. Ask your child what animal is running with the excavator.

Reading the Story: The sound effects are emphasized in this story. Try saying some of them together (Beep beep beep! Bam bam!). When no big tool or truck can do the last job in the story, talk about how being small can have advantages too!

After the Story: Ask your child questions about the story: Who was the smallest construction vehicle on the site? What could he do at the end? Do you know someone smaller than you?

Observe an actual construction site with your child from a distance and see if you can find some of the vehicles in the story. Take toy trucks into a park, playground, or yard and recreate your own construction scene!
